An angle grinder, also known as a grinder, is a tool that performs both cutting and grinding. Available in electric and pneumatic drive types, different discs can be installed to cut and grind different materials. It's primarily used for cutting, grinding, and brushing metal, wood, and stone.
Common angle grinder models are categorized by the size of the accessories used: 100mm (4-inch), 125mm (5-inch), 150mm (6-inch), 180mm (7-inch), and 230mm (9-inch), which are installed with corresponding discs.
Angle grinders use high-speed rotation to contact the material for grinding, cutting, rust removal, polishing, and shaping. Due to their high speed, angle grinders are not suitable for cutting wood for safety reasons. As the name suggests, they are designed for flexible grinding and cutting at various angles.
In practice, angle grinders are considered universal tools and are essential tools for carpentry, metalworking, welding, locksmithing, and renovation. It's recommended that every household have one. Buying online is often much cheaper than buying in-store for the same brand.
When choosing an angle grinder, if you're just using it for grinding, the cheapest one will suffice. I used to buy corded ones, which had a tail every time I used them, which was annoying. Now I'm buying lithium-ion batteries. While they're about twice as expensive, they're more convenient. They're also less powerful than corded ones, so I recommend a corded one for long-term, heavy-duty use.
